EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
